Construction Complete on Iberdrola Renewables' North Dakota Wind Project

LCG, December 30, 2009--Iberdrola Renewables yesterday announced that construction of the Rugby Wind Power Project is complete. The $300 million project has an electric generating capacity of 149 MW.

The Rugby Wind Power Project is sited in north central North Dakota, near the town of Rugby. The wind farm includes 71, 2.1-MW Suzlon wind turbines. The tower total height is 407 feet, and the rotor diameter is nearly 290 feet. Construction began in the spring of 2009, and commercial operation commenced on December 1.

As announced last April, Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) will purchase 40 MW of output from the Rugby Wind Power Project, with the remaining generating capacity available for purchase.

MRES is an organization of 60 member communities in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. A MRES spokesperson stated last April that, "There are a number of reasons why we chose to participate in the Rugby Wind Project. For one, this project fits very well with our strategy of investing in renewable energy and it is appealing because of the available transmission. Also, it helps us comply with renewable energy requirements in each of the four states in which MRES has members."
