LCG, January 6, 2010--American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) announced yesterday that its wholly-owned AMSC Windtec™ subsidiary executed an agreement with Dongfang Turbine Co. Ltd. (Dongfang) to design and jointly develop 5 MW wind turbines for the offshore market.

Dongfang has exclusive rights to the 5-MW, offshore wind turbine designs in China and plans to begin supplying the global offshore market in 2012. According to the press release, AMSC has the right of first refusal to supply the core electrical components for Dongfang's 5 MW wind turbines.

Dongfang plans to commission shortly its first prototype 2.5-MW wind turbine designed under an earlier agreement with AMSC Windtec. Full production is expected to commence in the latter half of this year.

Dongfang is a subsidiary of Dongfang Electric Corporation, China's largest provider of power generating equipment and electric generating stations. In 2004 Dongfang Turbine entered the wind power market and became China's third largest wind turbine manufacturer in 2008.
