Mitsubishi Expands Production for Solar PV Market

LCG, March 3, 2010--Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced Monday that it has completed construction of a photovoltaic (PV) cell production facility. Mitsubishi Electric expects to increase its annual PV cell/module production capacity by 50 MW to 270 MW by March 2011, and it plans to reach an annual capacity of 600 MW.

Mitsubishi Electric will add the production of highly efficient monocrystalline silicon PV cells to its current production of polycrystalline silicon PV modules. The new manufacturing facility is located at its Nakatsugawa Works Iida Factory in Nagano Prefecture.

Mitsubishi Electric expects the global PV market to grow from 5,550 MW in fiscal 2009 (April 2008 - March 2009) to approximately 8,000 MW in fiscal 2012, with the growth driven by the introduction of new PV-related stimulus programs in Japan, feed-in-tariff systems spreading in Europe, plus growth in the North American market. Mitsubishi Electric's expansion of production capacity is in response to the continued increase in the global demand for PV systems.

With its outlook for significant growth in global demand, Mitsubishi Electric also plans to construct new production lines to manufacture monocrystalline silicon PV modules at its Nakatsugawa Works Kyoto Factory in Kyoto Prefecture by March 2011. Furthermore, Mitsubishi Electric will increase its monthly PV inverter production capacity at its Nakatsugawa Works from 4,000 units to 6,000 units in May 2010.
