New York PSC Approves Construction for NRG's Astoria Project

LCG, January 21, 2011-NRG Astoria Power LLC, a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc (NRG), received approval from the New York State Public Service Commission (Commission) yesterday to construct a 1,040-MW electric generating station at an industrial site in Long Island City, New York. The proposed facility will replace a 600-MW power plant. The Commission also approved the proposed financing. NRG Astoria plans to continue to develop, finance, build and operate the project.

The Astoria project, estimated to cost $1.4 billion, is a repowering project that will be fueled by natural gas and incorporate more efficient, cleaner burning technology. The initial phase of the project will replace seven simple-cycle peaking units that have a combined rated capacity of 120 MW with a combined-cycle facility that will have a total generating capacity of 520 MW. Construction on the first phase is expected commence soon and begin delivering power to the grid in the summer of 2013.

The second phase of the project will replace 24 simple-cycle units that have a combined capacity of 480 MW, with a combined-cycle facility identical to that previously installed. The second phase is expected to commence operations in 2015.
