Ontario Approves Contracts for Renewable Projects Totaling 872 MW of Capacity

LCG, February 25, 2011-- The province of Ontario yesterday announced that it approved contracts for 40 new renewable power projects with a combined electric generating capacity of 872 MW and a corresponding private sector investment of over $3 billion.

The approved contracts are for wind, solar, and small hydroelectric projects. The contracts are part of Ontario's feed-in tariff (FIT) program that was launched in October 2009 as a means to incent the construction of renewable power facilities and to compensate for Ontario's planned loss of electric generation due to discontinuing coal combustion in its coal-fired generating stations by the end of 2014.

Four wind projects, with a combined capacity of 615 MW, received contracts, with the largest recipient being Nigiig Power Corp., which is developing a 300-MW project in northern Ontario.

Thirty-five solar projects, with a combined capacity of 257 MW, received contracts. SkyPower Ltd, received 13 solar contracts totaling 148.3 MW of capacity.
