NRC Poised to Extend License for Vermont Yankee

LCG, March 11, 2011--The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) yesterday voted 4-0 to support a decision by its Atomic Safety Licensing Board to deny an objection by New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution to extend the license of the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant. The NRC is expected to issue a 20-year license extension for the 605-MW, nuclear reactor that is owned and operated by Entergy Corp. The existing operating license is scheduled to expire in March 2012.

The New England coalition was concerned with water leaks at the plant. Furthermore, there is additional opposition to the plant. A year ago the Vermont Senate voted against relicensing, and the new Governor (and former Senate pro tem) of Vermont is opposed to relicensing. Last November, shortly after tne new Governor was elected, Entergy announced that it was exploring the potential sale of Vermont Yankee.

The Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station began commercial operations in November 1972. The license renewal application to extend the 40-year license for another 20 years was submitted by Entergy to the NRC on January 27, 2006.
