NRC Approves License Extension for PSEG Nuclear's Hope Creek Generating Station

LCG, July 21, 2011--The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) yesterday approved PSEG Nuclear's request to extend the original, 40-year operating license for Hope Creek Generating Station an additional 20 years. With the extension, the 1,216-MW nuclear power plant will be licensed through 2046. PSEG Nuclear filed its request to extend the license nearly two years ago in August 2009.

The NRC approved at the end of June a similar, 20-year extension for PSEG's adjacent Salem Generating Station Units 1 and 2 through 2036 and 2040, respectively. Salem Units 1 and 2 each have a net generating capacity of approximately 1,175 MW. PSEG's three nuclear units provide a significant quantity of base load, carbon-free electricity to consumers in the area.

PSEG Nuclear continues to pursue constructing another nuclear plant in Salem County. In May 2010, the company filed an application for an early site permit (ESP) and expects an NRC decision by the end of 2013.
