DONG Energy Announces Framework Agreement for 6-MW Offshore Wind Turbines

LCG, July 20, 2012--DONG Energy announced yesterday that they have executed an agreement with Siemens Energy regarding the supply and servicing of 300 offshore wind turbines - each with a 6-MW generating capacity.

DONG Energy plans to install the turbines at offshore wind farms in the UK from 2014 through 2017, and Siemens Energy will design, manufacture, supply, install and service the 6-MW turbines.

The increased capacity of the 6-MW, offshore turbines designed by Siemens Energy targets lowering the cost of wind power and expanding the development of offshore wind farms. The wind turbines use a 154-meter rotor based on gearless direct drive technology.

"The agreement will enable DONG Energy to install a significantly larger turbine from 2014 compared to the turbines, we know today. The agreement is a key element of DONG Energy?s strategy to significantly expand offshore wind and will strengthen our position as market leader in the offshore area," stated Carsten Krogsgaard Thomsen, Acting CEO of DONG Energy.

The CEO of the Siemens Energy Sector stated, "Offshore wind conditions are strong and stable, enabling an energy yield that can be about 40 per cent higher than onshore. The UK, Denmark and Germany, in particular, are counting on the future of offshore wind energy. We are pleased that our long-term customer DONG Energy has chosen the latest generation of our wind turbines. Together, we are working to further reduce the costs of this environmentally-friendly form of power generation."

DONG Energy, Siemens and Centrica Plc also announced last month that they completed a $660 million funding agreement for the 270-MW, Lincs off-shore wind project. The project, located in the North Sea, will use 75 Siemens 3.6-MW turbines and is scheduled to commence commercial operations in the first half of 2013.
