Siemens Installs Prototype of 4-MW Offshore Wind Turbine
LCG, December 27, 2012--Siemens Energy recently announced that it has installed the prototype of a new 4-MW wind turbine in Østerild, Denmark. The new model, designated SWT-4.0, is scheduled to be offered for sale this spring after testing is complete.
The new wind turbine is based on the popular Siemens SWT-3.6, of which there are 500 installations and another 1,200 turbines in Siemens' order backlog. Initially, the prototype 4.0-MW turbine will utilize the standard 120-meter rotor used for the 3.6-MW turbine; however, the rotor will soon be upgraded with a 130-meter rotor with 63-meter rotor blades. The nacelle and tower structures will be upgraded versions of the SWT-3.6, and the blades will be manufactured using the Siemens IntegralBlade® technology without glue joints.
New technologies incorporated in the SWT-4.0 include the new aeroelastically tailored 63-meter (B63) blade designed to improve performance and reduce loads. Serial production of the SWT-4.0-130 is planned for 2015.
"Thanks to a generator and rotor upgrade, the new 4MW allows our customers a faster return on investment than our proven 3.6 MW wind turbine. We expect this product to further strengthen our leading role on the global offshore wind markets", says Siemens' Chief Technology Officer of the Wind Power Division.
