Florida PSC Approves Cost Recovery for FPL's Nuclear Investments

LCG, October 4, 2013--The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) announced Tuesday that it approved recovery of $43.4 million for construction of planned nuclear generation and improvements to existing nuclear units for Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), effective January 2014.

The cost recovery includes costs for construction investments in FPL's planned Turkey Point Units 6 & 7 and for upgrades that added generation capacity to existing Turkey Point Units 3 & 4 and St. Lucie Units 1 & 2. In total, these nuclear projects are expected to add over 2,700 MW of new, non-carbon emitting base-load power generating capacity to FPL?s system. The design for the proposed new reactors is the Westinghouse AP1000, which has a generating capacity of approximately 1,117 MW per reactor.

In August 2007, FPL announced plans to add the two nuclear reactors at the Turkey Point facility south of Miami, and FPL filed its plans with the PSC to construct the reactors in October of that year. In March 2008, the PSC approved FPL's petition for a determination of need to build the reactors. The filing was the initial step toward receiving approval from the State to build Units 6 and 7, which at the time were scheduled to commence operations in 2018 and 2020.

At this time, FPL has not yet decided to build the new reactors, and the operational date has been deferred until approximately 2022 and 2023.
