New York Power Authority to Develop New Nuclear Facility in Upstate New York

LCG, June 23, 2025--The Governor of New York today directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop and construct an advanced nuclear power plant in upstate New York to deliver zero-emission power that supports a reliable and affordable electric grid. NYPA will lead the effort to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of at least one gigawatt (GW) of electricity, either alone or in partnership with private entities. New Steam Generators Delivered to FirstEnergy's Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station

LCG, October 23, 2012--FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., announced Monday that it has received the two new steam generators for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio. The steam generators were shipped across Lake Erie to the Port of Toledo last week and transported by train to the station over the weekend.

The new steam generators will be installed during Davis-Besse's regularly scheduled refueling outage in the spring of 2014. The steam generators function as heat exchangers and produce the superheated steam to drive the turbine generator.

The site vice president of Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station stated, "Installation of new steam generators supports the continued safe and reliable operations at Davis-Besse. The new steam generators will help ensure that Davis-Besse remains an integral part of northwest Ohio's economy, and a clean energy source, now and in the future."

Fabrication of the new steam generators began in 2009 by The Babcock and Wilcox Company at its facility in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. Each steam generator measures 74 feet in length, 12 feet in diameter and weighs 470 tons.

The single reactor, Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station is Ohio's first nuclear power plant. The 900-MW facility began generating power in 1977, and its current operating license expires in 2017. FirstEnergy is in the license renewal application process with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Once approved, Davis-Besse will be licensed to operate through 2037.
