LCG, March 205, 2025--The Southwest Power Pool (SPP) today announced it will soon be the first regional transmission organization (RTO) in the nation to provide full services in both the Eastern and Western Interconnections of the U.S. power grid. On March 20, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) unanimously approved Southwest Power Pool’s amended tariff that includes provisions that enable Western members to join the RTO. The expansion of the SPP RTO is scheduled to go live April 1, 2026.

NextEra Hosts Official Dedication of 250-MW Genesis Solar Energy Center in California
LCG, April 25, 2014 - NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, yesterday held the official dedication of the Genesis Solar Energy Center, a 250-MW solar electric generating facility located in Riverside County, California. Pacific Gas & Electric Company has contracted for all of the electricity generated by the facility under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA).
The Genesis Solar Energy Center includes two, 125-MW generating units that employ a concentrating solar power (CSP) thermal trough design. Solar collectors capture and concentrate sunlight to heat a synthetic oil, which then heats water to create steam. The steam is transported to an onsite turbine-generator to produce electricity. Over 600,000 parabolic mirrors are assembled in rows that create thermal troughs where the synthetic oil is heated. The mirrors, along with two, 125-MW steam turbines, are located on the approximately 1,950 acres of land managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
The project groundbreaking occurred in January 2011, and the units entered service in November 2013 and March 2014, respectively. The project is owned and operated by an affiliate of NextEra Energy Resources. Project development commenced in 2007.
The chairman, CEO and president of PG&E Corporation (PG&E) stated, "PG&E remains fully on track to meet California's clean energy goals by 2020. Today more than half of the electricity we provide to our customers comes from greenhouse-gas-free sources, including the nation's largest utility-owned hydroelectric system and Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. Thanks to projects like the Genesis Solar Energy Center with NextEra Energy, we'll continue to be among the nation's leaders in clean energy."
The California Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) sets targets for utilities at 25 percent of retails sales by December 31, 2016 and 33 percent of retails sales by December 31, 2020.
