LCG, June 23, 2025--The Governor of New York today directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop and construct an advanced nuclear power plant in upstate New York to deliver zero-emission power that supports a reliable and affordable electric grid. NYPA will lead the effort to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of at least one gigawatt (GW) of electricity, either alone or in partnership with private entities. The directive builds on the Governor’s 2025 State of the State to develop nuclear energy plans in New York.

Emera Maine and Central Maine Power Sign MOU to Develop Transmission Projects and Support Renewable Development
LCG, July 9, 2014-Emera Maine and Central Maine Power (CMP) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for joint project development of transmission projects to improve grid capacity between southern New England and northern Maine, where over 2,100 MW of wind farm capacity has been proposed.
Emera Maine and CMP have outlined two initial phases of work. Phase One will analyze the feasibility of every project, including technical feasibility, public policy, regulatory considerations, and outreach to other potential parties to the project. Phase Two will include all development activities from design, engineering, siting, through construction bidding.
As the state's two largest utilities in Maine, CMP (which is owned by Iberdrola) and Emera Maine serve more than 95 percent of Maine's homes and businesses. CMP is nearing completion of the Maine Power Reliability Program, a $1.4 billion investment in new transmission lines and substations to reinforce its 345 kV bulk power grid.
Emera Maine includes the former Bangor Hydro Electric and Maine Public Service. A recent major transmission project completed by Emera Maine is the 85-mile, 345-kV Northeast Reliability Interconnect.
"Electric transmission can be a significant challenge to new low/no emitting generation sources seeking to enter our New England market", said the president and COO of Emera Maine. "That's a challenge that our companies have been working together on for some time, particularly in Northern Maine.? With this MOU we are renewing and expanding these efforts to identify and develop creative and cost effective transmission solutions to benefit the State and the region."
Six New England governors have expressed support for investments to improve the grid to enable greater development of and access to renewable energy generation.
