Kemper County IGCC Project Achieves Commercial Operation of Combined Cycle Unit
LCG, August 18, 2014-Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, announced yesterday that Mississippi Power's Kemper County IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) combined cycle unit has been placed into commercial operation and is now available to serve Mississippi Power customers' energy needs during the remaining summer months.
Mississippi Power's Vice President of Generation Development stated, "This is a major success for the Kemper project, and it's all thanks to the men and women who have worked safely and dedicated their time and hard work to make it happen."
Plant Ratcliffe, located in Kemper County, Mississippi, is a 582-MW, state-of-the-art IGCC facility. The facility includes gasifiers that will convert lignite, mined at the plant, into synthesis gas. The project is also connected to a natural gas pipeline. The facility is further designed to capture approximately 65 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions, which will then be compressed and transported via a new, 61-mile pipeline to inject underground and support Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) operations.
In December 2010, Mississippi Power held the ground breaking ceremony for the project. The plant was originally synchronized to the grid on October 5, 2013 during testing that used natural gas as fuel. Since that time, critical testing has occurred on various components. The project reached two major milestones last month, with the testing of the combined cycle unit and pressure testing of both gasifiers. Testing has now culminated with the combined cycle unit passing all applicable performance and environmental tests and being made available at full output for commercial operation.
Later this year, another key project milestone - the first gasifier heat up ??? is scheduled to occur. The IGCC facility is scheduled to begin operation in the second quarter 2015.
