Minnesota Power Completes Fourth Phase of Bison Wind Energy Center

LCG, January 20, 2015--Minnesota Power, a division of ALLETE, Inc., announced yesterday that it has completed commissioning on the fourth phase of its Bison Wind Energy Center, located in south-central North Dakota. The estimated investment cost for the 205-MW expansion project is $345 million. The total generating capacity of the Bison Wind Energy Center is now nearly 500 MW.

The project, Bison 4, includes 64 wind turbines that deliver power via a 465-mile direct current (DC) transmission line that connects the Square Butte Substation in Center, North Dakota, to the company's Arrowhead substation near Duluth, Minnesota. The first three phases of the Bison Wind Energy Center include 101 wind turbines that were built in 2010-12 and have a combined electric generating capacity of 292 MW.

The North Dakota Public Service approved the Bison 4 site construction permit in September 2013, and construction began that fall. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission then approved Minnesota Power's petition seeking cost recovery from customers for Bison 4 investments in January 2014.

ALLETE's Chairman stated, "We've made significant strides over the last eight years to bring our energy generation into better balance. Development of renewable energy from wind and water is rapidly transforming our nation's energy landscape and with the addition of nearly 500 MWs of wind from the Bison development on our system, we are providing cleaner energy while maintaining the affordability and reliability of electric power our customers in northeastern Minnesota expect."

Bison 4 is part of Minnesota Power's strategic EnergyForward plan to diversify its energy supply while adding renewables and reducing emissions, including carbon, at power plants.
