Exelon Announces Plan to Install 195 MW of Additional Peaking Capacity in Medway, Massachusetts

LCG, February 6, 2015--Exelon Generation announced yesterday that it will add two gas-fired peaking units at an existing power plant in Medway, Massachusetts. The expansion project is in the permitting phase now, and construction is expected to begin in 2017. The project is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2018.

The project will add 195 MW of capacity to the existing West Medway Generating Station, which was acquired by Exelon from Boston Edison in 2002. The existing plant capacity is 117 MW and includes three peaking units that can be fueled by either natural gas or oil. The two new units will also have dual fuel capability.

The new peaking capacity is planned to improve regional reliability and complement the growing intermittent solar and wind resources.

The president of Exelon Power stated, "We are excited to develop this new project in the greater Boston area. This project demonstrates the new 'pay for performance' capacity construct works and that it will attract development of new resources needed in the region."
