Google Announces Gas-fired Broadwing Energy Project with CCS

LCG, October 23, 2025--Google announced today a first-of-its kind agreement to support a natural gas-fired power plant with carbon capture and storage (CCS). The 400-MW Broadwing Energy power project, located in Decatur, Illinois, will capture and permanently store its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Southern Acquires Controlling Interest in 32-MW Solar PV Project in California

LCG, April 17, 2015--Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power yesterday announced the acquisition of a controlling interest in the 32-MW Lost Hills-Blackwell Solar Facility in California from First Solar, Inc. The remaining interest in the project will be owned by an affiliate of First Solar. Construction of the project began one year ago and is expected to be completed this quarter. First Solar will operate and maintain the facility, which is located in Kern County in the San Joaquin Valley.

The electricity and the associated renewable energy credits (RECs) produced by the Lost Hills-Blackwell Solar Facility will be sold under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and Roseville Electric. The renewable energy project fits Southern Power's business strategy of growing its wholesale business through the acquisition and construction of generating assets substantially covered by long-term contracts.

Southern Company's Chairman, President and CEO stated,
"Southern Company continues to strategically develop solar renewable projects across the country. By further diversifying our energy mix - and expanding our partnership with First Solar - we are demonstrating our commitment to provide clean, safe, reliable and affordable power for America's future."

The Lost Hills-Blackwell Solar Facility includes two adjacent sites: the 20-MW Lost Hills Solar Facility and the 12-MW Blackwell Solar Facility. The project includes over 454,000 of First Solar's thin film photovoltaic (PV) modules that are mounted on single-axis tracking tables to increase output.

With this and other announced projects, Southern Power states that it will own nearly 1,000 MW of renewable energy generating capacity that is either already in operation or under development. Last month, Southern Power announced an agreement to acquire the company's largest renewable electric generating plant and first wind project, the 299-MW Kay Wind facility.
