Amazon Announces Agreement with EDP Renewables for 100-MW Wind Farm Project

LCG, November 24, 2015-Amazon.com Inc. announced late last week that it has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with EDP Renewables for the power generated by the the 100-MW Amazon Wind Farm US Central in Ohio. The project, located on the northwest border near Indiana, is scheduled to commence commercial operations in May 2017.

Amazon Web Services plans to build at least three data centers in Ohio, and one of Amazon's key corporate objectives with respect to the environment is a long-term commitment to achieve 100 percent renewable energy usage for its global infrastructure footprint.

EDP Renewables received approval for 60-turbine projects previously named Timber Road I and III more than five years ago, and last September it received three-year extension for the projects from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.

A spokesperson for EDP Renewables stated, "Although market forces have hindered the project's development, the electric generation market has experienced other changes recently (several coal plants are expected to retire in the near term), and generation capacity is anticipated to be needed for Ohio and the region."

EDP Renewables' Timber Road II Wind Farm, with an installed capacity of 99 MW, was completed and in service now.
