How to Make the Grid Secure

LCG March 1, 2021--February’s winter weather has brought a new level of uncertainty to the Texas grid, on top of rapid renewables growth and hot summer weather. Not only did the blackouts solidify the need to plan for extreme weather in winter and summer, but they also brought Texas residents, the governor, and the legislature into a public conversation about demand-supply planning.

Siemens Receives Type Certificate for New 7-MW Offshore Wind Turbine

LCG, January 22, 2016--Siemens Wind Power was awarded by DNV GL final Type Certification for Siemens new 7-MW offshore wind turbine SWT-7.0-154, confirming full IEC-61400-22 compliance ahead of schedule. The increased electric generating capacity of the offshore wind turbine should lower the levelized cost of energy for new, offshore wind farms.

The new 7-MW offshore wind turbine was developed by Siemens to improve upon the company's flagship offshore wind turbine, the SWT-6.0-154, which includes a gearless turbine design. Siemens focused on improvements to the electrical system within the nacelle, including more powerful magnets, an upgraded power converter and upgraded transformer. These upgrades enable 10 percent more output than the predecessor, the SWT-6.0-154.

The Global Head of Business Development and Sales, Renewables Certification at DNV GL stated, "Conscious of the current state of the industry it was vital we deliver this project on schedule. We understand our customers' time pressures and the demand to continuously bring the latest turbine innovations to the market."

DNV GL built on experiences from the previous certification process of the 6-MW offshore wind turbine SWT-6.0-154 and the recent SWT-7.0-154 prototype certification. Looking ahead, DNV GL has also been contracted to work with Siemens on the upgrade of the 7-MW, including the power-boost feature to further increase the power output.
