Mortenson to Construct Xcel Energy's 600-MW Rush Creek Wind Project in Colorado

LCG, March 9, 2017--Mortenson announced yesterday that it has been selected to construct the 600-MW Rush Creek Wind Project in eastern Colorado. Xcel Energy will own and operate the project, which has a target in-service date of October 2018 and an estimated cost of over $1 billion.

The Rush Creek Wind Project will include the installation of 300 V110-2.0 wind turbines supplied by Vestas, together with construction of an 83-mile, 345 kV transmission line near Limon, Colorado.

Mortenson's Wind Energy, High Voltage Transmission and Civil groups will deliver full engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the project. The engineering design is scheduled to be complete this April, followed by construction starting in May 2017.

American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) reports that, at the end of 2016, the installed wind power capacity in Colorado is 3,026 MW, thus the 600-MW Rush Creek Wind Project will increase the installed capacity by nearly 20 percent.

Colorado?s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requires each investor owned utility (IOU), such as Xcel, to generate or cause to be generated 30 percent of its retail electricity sales in Colorado for the year 2020 and each following year. The Rush Creek Wind Project will help ensure Xcel achieves its RPS goals.
