Southern Power and Wärtsilä Sign MOU to Develop Flexible Gas Power Plant Projects
LCG, June 30, 2017--Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power and Wärtsilä today announced that they have executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop two flexible gas power plant projects that could be as large as 450 MW each. Southern Power will lead this project development effort, and Wärtsilä will provide technical and commercial support. Wärtsilä and Southern Power would build the power plants jointly and Wärtsilä's scope would be extended equipment supply.
Wärtsilä's fleet of natural gas-fired internal combustion engines in the U.S. has grown to over 3,000 MW, including both installed capacity and projects under construction. The U.S. demand for gas-fired, reciprocal engines, with fast start capabilities, minimal water needs, and lack of sensitivity to site altitude and ambient temperatures, has grown significantly in response to the increase in intermittent solar and wind electric generating capacity.
Southern Power's president and CEO stated, "Renewables are an important part of a diverse energy mix, and flexible generation complements the rapid growth of intermittent renewables. This agreement is an early stage in a lengthy process, but we believe this technology could be an excellent solution for our customers and for many others in the marketplace that we hope to serve through this relationship."
The development of flexible gas power plant projects aligns with the Southern Power's overall business strategy of strengthening its wholesale business through acquiring and constructing generating assets that are substantially covered by long-term contracts with creditworthy counterparties. Southern Power plans to strategically grow its portfolio of more than 12,600 MW in 11 states through the acquisition and development of clean energy solutions, which currently includes over 3,000 MW of renewable generation, plus 10 combined-cycle and combustion-turbine natural gas-fueled power plants.
Wärtsilä Energy Solutions' president stated, "In the USA we are seeing a large demand for flexible generation and Wärtsilä provides the most efficient and fastest starting solution making this the ideal investment for customers to serve the need for flexibility. We are excited to be teaming with Southern Power, a leader in the development, installation and operation of electric power facilities with a proven track record of operational reliability and safety."
Over the past 12 months, Wärtsilä has signed contracts signed with the cities of Denton, Texas and Tallahassee, Florida. The Denton project includes twelve 18-cylinder Wärtsilä 50SG engines operating on natural gas. The project is scheduled to begin commercial operations in July 2018. For the City of Tallahassee, Wärtsilä will supply equipment for one 19 MW plant and one 75 MW plant. These two gas-fired plants are scheduled to be operational during the second half of 2018.
