NextEra Energy and Google Collaborate on Accelerating Nuclear Power Deployment

LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

AEP Cancels Plans for the Wind Catcher Project

LCG, July 31, 2018--American Electric Power (AEP) announced Friday that it is canceling the proposed 2,000-MW Wind Catcher Energy Connection project as a result of the Public Utility Commission of Texas' July 26 decision to deny approval of the project. The project had been approved by the Arkansas Public Service Commission, Louisiana Public Service Commission and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. A decision was pending at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

AEP's chairman, president and chief executive officer stated, "We are disappointed that we will not be able to move forward with Wind Catcher, which was a great opportunity to provide more clean energy, lower electricity costs and a more diverse energy resource mix for our customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. To realize the full benefits of Wind Catcher for customers, timely approvals were required from all jurisdictions so we could complete the project by the end of 2020 and be eligible for 100 percent of the federal production tax credit. We want to thank our employees and our partners for all of their work on the development of the Wind Catcher project."

The Wind Catcher project, located in the Oklahoma Panhandle, was to have been the largest single-site wind project in the nation and was estimated to cost $4.5 billion. The project included the acquisition of the wind farm and the construction of a 360-mile dedicated generation tie line to the Tulsa area. Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO), a unit of AEP, and its affiliate, Public Service Co. of Oklahoma (PSO), were to have been the owners when the project was completed.
