NRC Accepts the Construction Permit Application for TVA's Small Modular Reactor Project

LCG, July 10, 2025--The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) accepted a construction permit application for review from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to build one of the nation’s first small modular reactors (SMR). TVA submitted its application in late May to use GE Vernova Hitachi’s BWRX-300 design and to install the advanced nuclear plant at its Clinch River site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Massachusetts Poised to Target More Offshore Wind

LCG, August 2, 2018--The Massachusetts Legislature approved H4857, An Act to Advance Clean Energy, on Tuesday that includes: an increase in the Massachusetts Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) goals to 35 percent by 2030, a 1,000 MW energy storage goal by 2025, and a path to install an additional 1,600 MW of offshore wind capacity. With the current goal of installing 1,600 MW of offshore wind capacity, the total offshore wind capacity would be 3,200 MW. The legislation will now be received by the Governor of Massachusetts.

The bill calls for the state's Department of Energy Resources (DOER) to "investigate the necessity, benefits and costs of requiring distribution companies" to jointly and competitively conduct additional offshore wind generation solicitations and procurements of up to approximately 1,600 MW of aggregate capacity by 31 December, 2035.

Massachusetts's electric distribution companies (EDCs) and the DOER earlier this year selected the 800 MW Vineyard Wind project as one step toward achieving the initial goal of adding 1,600 MW of offshore capacity. Yesterday, the DOER requested approval of the long-term contracts for the Vineyard Wind project filed by the EDCs.
